On April 13, 2025, on Palm Sunday, Russia struck the historic center of Sumy with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles equipped with cluster munitions. 35 people were killed, including two children, and more than 120 were injured. Over 70 buildings were damaged. The Sumy State University Congress Center, which was hit by one of the missiles, suffered significant destruction. The second missile exploded in the air, which is why the highest number of deaths and injuries occurred after the second strike – on the roadway and in the “trolleybus of death,” which people were taking home from church.
