With over 80,000 km of coastline, the more than 17000 islands of the archipelago of Indonesia are under imminent threat from rising sea levels. Experts predict that by 2050, thousands of the country's islands and nearly 1/3 of Java, where the capital Jakarta stands today will be under water. Flooding from tidal waves, tsunamis and coastal erosion severely impact the environment, and dramatically affect the local economy destroying property, livelihoods and displacing entire communities.
