This is one of the last remaining traditional Bengali boats, known as the Malar, rooted in Bengal’s riverine culture with a design dating back nearly 3,000 years. Once a symbol of craftsmanship and community life, it now faces disappearance due to rapid urbanization. This 93 foot vessel is lifted using bamboo scaffolding—the only traditional method—where ropes and pulleys require over 100 workers. This labor-intensive process reflects a fading tradition, making the Malar a living memory of Bengal’s heritage and culture.
