In September 2025, Super Typhoon Ragasa devastated Guangfu in eastern Taiwan. A landslide-dammed lake on Mataiāan Creek overflowed, releasing a wave of water and debris that destroyed bridges, breached embankments, and flooded large areas. 19 people were killed, many injured, and entire neighborhoods were displaced. Over 15,000 households lost electricity. Farms, homes, and infrastructure were destroyed, leaving residents without income. The disaster reflects the growing impact of extreme weather in a region repeatedly affected by typhoons, earthquakes, and landslides.
