According to a study published by the University of Melbourne, it is estimated that 10 million native wild animals: mammals, reptiles, birds, and other species are killed every year by road accidents in Australia on Australian roads. In a country with just 26 million inhabitants, and some 21 million registered motor vehicles, 10 million wild animals killed by road accidents each year is an absolutely staggering number, difficult to conceive. The vast majority of accidents occur between dusk and dawn, but also at any time of day. Others are injured and die hours or days later off the roads.
