For months, artisans in the town of Tultepec, in Estado de México, work on the construction of massive bulls filled with fireworks for the celebration of the patron saint, San Juan de Dios. In the early days of March they bring their bulls — which can number in the hundreds — into the streets and light the fireworks in front of thousands of people. The result is one of the most visually striking — and dangerous — traditions in the country. Participants dodge and dance around the spinning bulls as sparks and fire engulf them, like playing with a hundred thousand fireflies.
