Hikoi mo te Tiriti was a major nationwide protest march in Aotearoa New Zealand focused on defending the Treaty of Waitangi and opposing a controversial piece of government legislation known as the Treaty Principles Bill. The march called on the government to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the founding agreement signed in 1840 between M?ori chiefs and the British Crown and to reject a bill that many saw as undermining treaty protections and M?ori rights. The march culminated in a historic gathering of over 42,000 people at Parliament in Wellington, one of the largest protests in NZ history.
