The sea is central to the experience of migrating on the route I have witnessed most: from Africa to Europe. Here I juxtapose pictures of migrant survivors bravely trying to make peace with the sea after they managed to land in Italy with pictures I took during my numerous stints on rescue ships in the Mediterranean. Before leaving, the sea stood between reality and dream. After landing, the sea stands between exile and and return. Migration requires engaging the sea and therefore requires great courage. Migration, an epic with no cantor, should be sung like the Odyssey of our times.
