The space around Earth is no longer an untouched void. Orbits are crowded with debris: defunct satellites, rocket fragments, and collision shards. About 37,000 objects over 10 cm are tracked, plus more than a million smaller ones, dangerous at speeds up to 8 km/s and disruptive to astronomy. Yet satellites are essential for communications, navigation, and research. For this reason, monitoring orbital space is a global priority. Space is a shared resource that must be preserved, and Italy is emerging as a key European player in space safety.
